Educational activity:
Pedagogic activity includes the basic Course of zoology, along with a number of specialised subjects.
Research activity:
The Department is involved in the Institute Research Frame Program, and is part of a joint laboratory with the Institute of Physiology and Genetics in Liběchov and the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology in Vodňany .
The frame of research programs department is divided into the fields of: 1) Arrested development of specific parasitic nematodes species. 2) Relevancy of parasites in monitoring environmental pollution: The effect of cestode and nematode infections on heavy metal concentrations in host (small mammals). 3) Basic research of endangered species of insects and its application in management (sustainable development). 4) faunistics and taxonomy of insects as a tool for application in bioindicative models. 5) relation between fauna and landscape usage, including applied biocenology in plant protection. 6) Utilisation of water snails for ecotoxicology and bioindication. 7) Usage and genetic methods and geometric morphometry for differentiation of breeds and lineages of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). 8) Patterns and reasons of different pelagic behaviour of perch fry: insight into the declared ecological plasticity of a species in cooperation with: HBU AVCR České Budějovice. , 9) Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics: genetic, population and reproduction variability of invasive fish, Carassius, Gibelio, with the alternative bisexual /asexual reproduction in Central Europe". 10) The department cooperates with the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales concerning the protection of fresh water fish biodiversity.
