Information on organisation

History:
The Department of Economic Theories was set up as an entirely new department in May 1990. The Department then included six teaching staff and a secretary. It was headed, chronologically, by Ass. Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Mach, CSc, Ass. Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Keil, CSc, and Ass. Prof. Ing. Božena Kadeřábková, CSc. Currently, the Department Head is Prof. Ing. Miroslav Svatoš, Dean of the Faculty of Economics with the new staff member Ass. prof. Ing. Josef Brčák, CSc acting as Associate Head. The current number of staff is 15, one of them is an external lecturer, plus a secretary and a technical worker.Among the department´s achievements in the early 1990 was the publication of extensive mimeographed study texts of more than 1000 pages, including a mathematical application of the main problems of both microeconomy and macroeconomy. The texts were followed by an exercise book of concrete examples and questions concerned with separate topics of microeconomy and macroeconomy, thereby making the course fully equipped with accessible teaching materials.
Focus:
The department´s objective is to educate the future Faculty of Economics and Management (FEM) and other university graduates with the latest achievements of the economic theory, to teach them to understand and analyze the substance of social and economic processes, to assess them correctly, and based on them to adopt correct decisions under the conditions of market economy.
Educational activity:
The Department has been systematically oriented at increasing the quality of education in microeconomy and macroeconomy. Bachelor- and Master Degree courses as well as PhD studies have been offered by the Department. The Department has developed an International Economy Master-Degree Programme, and it runs regular PhD course studies. The subject of Economic Theory is taught even at other CULS faculties in both on-campus and combined forms of studies, and life-long education has also been in the Department´s focus. The Department covers the relevant state final examinations.
Research activity:
In the late 1990s the Department was involved in the FEM´s research and publication activities. The staff members collaborate in external grants and in grants of other FEM departments. Teaching activities and aids have been subject of research and improvement particularly with the focus on the combined studies.
International contacts:
The Department participates in the EU´s SOCRATES-ERASMUS Programme, namely with the University College Cork in Ireland and with Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in Spain. The Department is further involved in the MŠMT development programmes (KONTAKT) in cooperation with the Department of Economy of the Faculty of Economics of Technical University at Košice, Slovakia.
Other activities:
Besides these, the Department staff teach in other types of special and optional courses including foreign language courses for foreign students, etc. Among the important activities has been the launching of regular PhD studies at FEM and a number of optional courses. The Department has worked out an independent International Economy Master Degree Programme. Cooperation with the Department of Economy and Finance is under way at the South Bohemian University.
