Information on organisation

After the foundation of the Faculty of Mechanization in 1952 the activity of the contemporary Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology was included in the Department of Repair Business. As the independent department it came into being in 1955 by the detachment from the above mentioned department. In the initial period of the Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology the teaching of only four subjects was ensured, namely: Practice in Workshop, Material Science, Manufacturing Technology I and Manufacturing Technology II. In the course of the long period of the independent department existence new subjects came into being, some subjects became extinct or they were transformed in new subjects of the new contents, according to the topical requirements. The greatest increase of the by the department taught subjects number came after 1990. With the change of the study programs the opening of new obligatory and optional subjects, which extend and intensify the contents and extent of existing ones, showed to be efficient. They were these subjects: Practice in Workshop, Special Manufacturing Technology, Processing Plant of Nonmetallic Materials and Processing Plant of Metallic Materials. For Ph.D. students two new subjects were set up, namely Construction Materials and Production Techniques and Theory of Manufacturing Processes. The subject Material Science is taught in the English language, too. At this time the department offers to the students of the Faculty of Engineering altogether 12 subjects in bachelor, magister and Ph.D. study. All subjects are offered for students of regular and combined form of study.
Department of Materials and Manufacturing Technology, as it follows from its title, is engaged in problems of fields “Material Science” and “Manufacturing Technology”.
Educational activity:
At present the department pedagogues guarantee teaching of altogether 11 subjects, which are determined for students of all fields and levels of Faculty of Engineering, in the ordinary and in the part-time form of study. For the time of 1/3 semester the department takes part in the next subject determined for postgraduate students. The department is joined in the cycle of the life-long education, so-called University of the Three Age. For students of the bachelor and master courses the department offers 9 subjects, for students of the postgraduate course 2 subjects and for students of the successive master course 1 subject in English language.
Research activity:
• study of functional surfaces properties from the point of view of their wear resistance, corrosion, machinability and other properties, • problems of material degradation, • study of joining technologies (e.g. welding, bonding, soldering, brazing, riveting etc.), parting and cutting (using flame, laser, water-jet etc.) of metallic and nonmetallic materials, • study of briquetting and packeting of nonmetallic and metallic materials, pelleting technology, • if need be further themes corresponding to our department intention, whose solutions appears to be interesting and perspective.
International contacts:
Our department cooperates more than standard and for a long time with Slovakian University of Agriculture in Nitra, Department of Machine Reliability. In its framework the bilateral lectures of pedagogues are organized every year for magister and Ph.D. students of both faculties. The traditionally excellent cooperation is with Department of Manufacturing Technology and Substances, Technical University in Zvolen. Informal contacts are with some other foreign university workplaces, e.g. with Technical University, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Košice, with National Agricultural University in Kiev, Ondokuz Mayis University of Samsun and Moscow State Agricultural University of V.P.Goryachkin.
Other activities:
The aim of all department members everyday activity is to improve continuous the standard of teaching. Results of our own research are introduced in the teaching process. According to possibility the noted external experts from research institutes, from practice and representatives of renowned inland and foreign firms are invited to lecture the chosen themes. The field practice is the integral part of the successive study subjects.
