Information on organisation

The Department of Botany and Physiology of Plants is one of the oldest departments at the Czech University of Agriculture.
Some research tasks are completed in cooperation with the Department of Crop Production of the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural resources, (FAFNR) and with the Institute of Tropics and Sub-Tropics, (ITS). The department works with different research institutes and other non-research organisations from the Czech Republic and abroad. Major partners include the Institute of Experimental Botany, the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Research Institute of Plant Production in Prague - Ruzyně, and the Hop Research Institute in Žatec. In close conjunction with coal-mining companies Doly Bílina and Doly Nástup Tušimice , the department carries out floristic stocktaking before the actual mining starts, changes are judged in vegetation after the mining is finished, and reviews of the quality of the slagheap reclamation planting are produced.
Educational activity:
We lecture courses on botany and plant physiology for both full-time and distance study programmes. The department offers 15 courses for full-time students and 6 for distance students, in bachelor and postgraduate study. Lectures and seminars are delivered to students of the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources (FAFNR), the Faculty of Economics and Management and Institute of Tropics and Subtropics (ITS).
Research activity:
Scientific research within the department is focused on plant production, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, stress physiology and floristic, phytocenological factors. The department takes a role with different research grant agencies, including: the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA ČR), the National Agency for Agricultural Research (NAZV) and is involved with the research Plans of FAFNR, which are directly financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.
International contacts:
Our international partners are: the Department of Physiology of Plants at the State University of Agronomy in Nitra, the Department of Agrochemistry at the State University of Agronomy in St. Petersburg, and the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Toulouse. We support international student exchange through Socrates-Erasmus contract with the Department of Agronomy and Ecophysiology in Toulouse.
