Information on organisation

History:

Focus:
The Department of Genetics and Breeding is focused on all aspects of genetics and its applications in animal and plant breeding in pedagogical and research activities. General animal science including animal ethology, ethics and animal welfare are also subjects associated with the general principles pertaining to breeding of farm animals, pets and exotic animals.
Educational activity:
The department is active in BSc, MSc and PhD studies mainly with the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources (FAFNR) but also with other CUA faculties. Fundamental subjects are: General Genetics, Genetics of Plant, Animal science, and the Ethology of Animals. Further subjects are taught for specialised branches of MSc studies, including: Molecular Biology, Biometrical Genetics, Animal Breeding I and II, Gene Technologies, Creation and Reproduction of Cultivars, etc. The department is a provider of the masters study specialisations, Plant Breeding and Animal Breeding and cooperates in PhD studies in, General Plant Breeding and General Animal Breeding.
Research activity:
Research activities are focused on the following aspects: Variability in traits and characters of domestic animals, within; and between populations, and its exploitation in animal breeding in small and large populations. Studies of selected genetic, economic and breeders aspects of meat performance in rabbits. Hybridisation for meat breeds, performance testing of breeds, lines and crossbred populations. Exploitation and conservation of genetic resources of farm animals in the Czech Republic. Regeneration and conservation of Czech Red Cattle. Genetic analysis and breeding of Old Kladruby Horse. Exploitation of genetic markers (DNA markers) for estimation of genetic structure of cultivars. Cultivare fingerprinting, and the detection of valuable economic traits of plants. Study of markers beneficial to plant breeding and the detection of genetic markers of resistance against diseases and pests.
