The Department of Forage Crops and Grasslands management is a traditional specialization in all agricultural universities. Doc. dr. ing. A. Klečka is recognized world wide as a founder of forage research. The Department of forage crops was founded in the Czech Agriculture University in 1963. From 1995 to 2002, the department was primarily concerned with turf teaching. In 2002, the department was renamed as The Department of Forage Crops and Grassland Management.
Focus:
The department deals with the growing of annual and perennial fodder crops on arable land and with the ecology and utilization of perennial grasslands. Technology, environmentally sensitive energy utilization of fodder crops or turf are also studied.
Educational activity:
The department provides 35 subjects for full time or distance students at all CUA faculties. Practical teaching is furnished by laboratory work, demonstration in the field, and the playgrounds, lawns and school farm in Lány are all at students disposal. Students thesis range from traditional forage production (technology, quality) to energy utilization of fodder crops or set a side and turf.
Research activity:
Experiments with annual and perennial fodder crops grown on arable land are situated in the research station of FAFNR in Červený Újezd, or in the experimental field at CUA. The research on perennial grasslands is conducted on local grasslands.
International contacts:
The department cooperates with the Agriculture University in Krakov, with the Agriculture Faculty in Novi Sad and with the Faculty of Agrobiology and Food Resources in Nitra.
