Information on organisation

History:
Department´s history is connected with beginning of the independent agriculture subject at the Czech Technical University in Prague. Due to foundation of the independent University of Agriculture in 1952 the former institutions of the University were renamed to departments. Institution of General and Special Crop Production was divided to General Crop Production which was renamed to Department of General Agriculture. Special Crop Production Department transformed into Department of Crop Production, which became one of the biggest departments at the Facfulty of Agronomy. Simultaneously following institutions were attached to the Department of Crop Production: forage production, plant breeding and horticulture. Also selective station in Uhříněves which was founded by Prof. ing. dr. Jelínek and primarily belonged only to the breeding institute became part of the Department of Crop Production.
Focus:
The Department is focused on education and research concerning field crops growing for technical, energetic and food utilization. We are focused on intensive, integrated and ecological systems of management in agriculture. Professional, scientific-research and pedagogical orientation always placed the Department to profiled workplaces of the Faculty, providing education for students of all Faculties at the University. Disciplines focused on field crops growing, yield formation and production quality create crucial part of the subjects. They cooperate with zootechnic Departments on education of complex conceived subjects, e.g. Principles of Agriculture or Agricultural Production. Results of the research are published or handed on to professional agricultural practice at conferences, seminars and field days, which are organized by the Department periodically (oil crops, sugar beet, malting barley, poppy seed, seed and seedling) or according to actual need (ecological agriculture). The Department also provides a professional consultancy.
Educational activity:
Department of Crop Production ensures education in special plant production for students of all Faculties at the CUA in modifications required by concerned study programmes and subjects. The Department contributes to education of specialists and to enlargement of graduates profile by teaching of other disciplines, focused on ecological and alternative agriculture, on seed production, hop growing, medicinal, aromatic and spice plants production, special crops and agricultural consultancy. The Department also provides education for students from other Faculties at the CUA and offers a wide range of optional disciplines, which improve proficiency of graduates. Part of the pedagogical work is supervising of practical training of students, diploma students and PhD students of Special Plant Production subject supervising. The Department also guarantees Bachelor study subjects - Crop Production (profession Bc) and Plant Growing (theoretical Bc). In Master degree study subjects guarantees the subjects Crop Production and Management in Agriculture. Complete list of the taught subjects is placed on the web pages of the Department.
Research activity:
Research activities of the Department are focused on agroecological factors of yield formation and quality of field crops, i.e. oil crops (rapeseed, poppy seed, mustard), cereals (malting barley, food wheat), legumes, root and tuber crops, hop and medicinal plants, on organic farming, seed production. This extensive sphere of action was enabled by research concept of the Department and also by new research concept which deals with variant growing systems. Wide research activities are based on succesful grant projects and on cooperation with specialists from other Departments at the CUA or from other research institutions. Important share in scientific-research activity have also PhD students at the Department. Continual priorities of the research are following: monitoring of agroecological factors of yield formation including production quality and growing systems of oil crops, cereals, root and tuber crops and legumes, organic farming, seed production, medicinal plants and hop with aim to submit proposals for innovation of growing technology. In previous year all employees of the Department including PhD students were chief solvers in 13 external grants and participated in solving of other 6 projects (GAČR, NAZV, FRVŠ), two school projects and five projects of Faculty Grant Agencies. Significant amount of activity belongs to solving of the research concept, where the Department participates in the part called "Variable Growing Systems for Marketable and Special Plants in Relation to Agrosystem, Production and Quality“.
International contacts:
We closely cooperate with the sister departments in the CR, Slovakia, Germany, Austria and Poland. We are also developing cooperation with University in Osiek, Croatia.
